It Started With an Empty Space Next to the Lawn Mower

Having an abnormally high garage ceiling was bothering me one night, so I decided to build a home rock climbing wall. I probably sold the idea by saying it was for the kids, but I was equally excited about the prospects of honing my climbing skills in the dead of winter. The end result was a 16X8 overhanging plywood monolith and a lot of neighborhood kids in my driveway trying to look extra friendly. “That sure looks fun, mister!”

Needless to say the potential climbing hold capacity of a home rock climbing wall this size is somewhat substantial, and generally speaking quality holds are not free (I’ll return to this in a moment). I started accumulating what I could over time, buying used holds from gyms, scored some at a garage sale, tried to make a few out of natural stone (not good), and bought several brands of okay holds from companies online.

Free Atomik Climbing Holds

Then one day I came across the Atomik Climbing Holds website and the holds were free! Not joking. This company gives out a ton of free and deeply discounted product if you follow them on Facebook—sometimes surrounding holidays, sometimes just for kicks. The strategy must be a winner for them, because once I started loading up my wall with a complimentary Atomik holds I was hooked and started buying. Great quality, fun colors and shapes for kids, legit holds for adults, huge selection, lifetime warranty, and reasonable pricing.
